Kiranam Co-operative Society

The Background
Women, as compared to men, are more affected by poverty, with the attendant problems like lower wages, lack of job security, long working hours and drudgery. They are also deprived of the resources which would enable them to increase their economic conditions and social status.

Need for Micro-Credit?
This unit was started with a long-term objective to commence a small scale industry using the technical skills of the inmates under the guidance of abled personalities. The co-operative members are presently being trained in making
clay toys, printing handkerchiefs, preparation of bamboo letterboxes, making chalk-pieces, candle making and manufacturing of air-coolers. It is proposed to extend the training to manufacturing of simple items like phenyl and chips making shortly

Kiranam's Strategy

Micro-Credit Scenario and Concerns

A Strategy - Step by Step
- facilitating women's access to credit and income generation activities.
- Ensure that the process of empowerment is self-sustaining.
- to build up sound financial management skills in grassroots women, and    demonstrate their credit-worthiness as a first step in building a long    term relationship between the groups and formal banking institutions.
- make a broader impact on the lives of poor women blending   empowerment and development activities.
